RENEWABLE UK (RUK) WIND TURBINE MEDICALS

Please bring: ​ • photographic ID, eg. passport or driving licence • any relevant medical information, detailing medication or significant ill health • comfortable clothing and footwear in which to conduct an exercise test

The Renewable UK medical is usually valid for 2 years from the date of the examination, unless there is a medical reason to shorten the duration. Provided you pass the medical, the certificate will be given to you at the end of your appointment.

The purpose of the medical is to establish whether you are fit for working on a wind turbine. The assessment is designed to detect and assess any medical conditions that may compromise safety by creating a risk of falling, sudden incapacity requiring rescue or an adverse impact on the safety of others. It also assesses capability for regular climbing of vertical ladders and for working in hot, confined spaces. The medical will include: • completion of a screening questionnaire, designed to highlight any medical issues that might be deemed significant • a full physical examination (including height, weight, blood pressure etc.) • testing of eyesight and colour vision • testing of ears and hearing • a Chester Step Test (a step based exercise test) • selected additional tests if deemed necessary, for example spirometry (lung function testing), ECG, urine analysis Please be aware that it will be necessary for you to be partially undressed to conduct a full examination. Privacy and dignity will be of paramount importance at all times and you will be offered a chaperone.

The Chester Step Test is a simple but reliable way to assess aerobic fitness. It is widely used in different occupational settings as it is safe, practical, quick and has reasonable validity. The test requires the candidate to step on to and off a raised platform or step (usually 25-30 cm in height), in time to a beat. Heart rate is monitored throughout, via a chest or arm strap, and the stepping rate is increased every 2 minutes. The test finishes when a heart rate of 80% of your predicted maximum is reached, or 5 stepping periods have been completed. The maximum duration of the test is therefore 10 minutes. As the test is dependent on measuring heart rate, please do not drink excess alcohol or caffeine in the 24 hour period before taking the test, as this could affect the results.

Usually no more than 45 minutes.

Provided you pass the examination then you will receive the completed certificate at the end of your appointment. A receipt will also be provided.
